The World’s End and Conformity with Jeff Hewitt

November 03, 2014

Speaking of fear, nothing frightens Gary King – played by Simon Pegg in The World’s End – more than the fear of adulthood. In his world, adulthood means yielding his place as the most beloved alpha dog youth in the pleasant English village of Newton Haven. While his friends Peter (Eddie Marsan), Oliver (Martin Freeman), Steven (Paddy Considine), and Andy (Nick Frost) have embraced the boring world of responsibility (and jobs, and family), Gary, with his long coat and Sisters of Mercy t-shirt, remains free… free to do what he wants, any old time.

Gary goes on a long, strange trip, never quite growing up the way we want him to, but never necessarily held accountable for his lack of compassion or abundance of impulsivity. He’s the man many men wish they could still be, if only they knew that truly, down that path often lays despair and a specific kind of sadness. He’s forgotten upon his return to Newton Haven… Is it due to the passage of nearly two decades, or is there something more sinister afoot?

What does the android invasion in The World’s End have to say about growing up, about the proliferation of technology, and the seemingly inevitable reign of homogenization? Is Gary King right that humans should be allowed to blunder their way through history, or can desperate loneliness result in the failure of civilization? This week, Tobias and Ivey welcome Primal Paper Comics’ The Ends creator Jeff Hewitt to discuss The World’s End and Conformity!
