It drips from the shadows of history and our own uncertainty about our place in the world, and our control over it. More palpable than fear, but not heart-stoppingly terrifying, it reminds us we’re alive, thrills us into being. It’s called horror, and it’s the perfect decoration for the Halloween season.


But what does horror mean, especially in the realm of film? What does it look like, and what does it feel like? Does it require a supernatural element – something that could not be we wrap around our fears of what is? Or is it the mundane unpleasantness of everyday life, and the hell of “other people�


This week, Block Bluster! begins counting down to Halloween 2014 with You’re Next, a critically respected thriller that not many people of heard of, unfortunately. But – even with its animal masks and gore – does its squabbling family politics, classify it as “horrorâ€? Did the marketing sell it as something it wasn’t?
