Cool World and Artistic Vision with Kevin Copeland

October 06, 2014

We present this week’s episode of Block Bluster! with an apology. Normally, we suspect our listeners seek out the movies we talk about, but in this case, you really don’t have to, and we’re terribly sorry if you already have. Cool World was a movie Tobias remembered from his youth for being quirky and weird, if not particularly impactful. Not only was it not impactful, it was not quirky. It was not weird. It was purely, simply, bad.

But was it supposed to be? Director Ralph Bakshi circa 1992 was due for some legitimate Hollywood respect, and hoped to get some by creating a dark, R-rated horror comedy combining live-action and animation. Instead what happened was Cool World, a movie star Kim Basinger wanted to watch with sick children in hospitals. A movie that showed Brad Pitt’s charisma could be drowned in poorly designed sets, clunky worldbuilding, and inconsistent eyelines.

What happens when too many visions clash to create cinematic aberrations? Why are so many cooks allowed in the kitchen? Will Ivey ever recover? This week, he and Tobias welcome their good friend Kevin Copeland to discuss Cool World and Artistic Vision! Kevin’s the mastermind behind DRAWtoberfest, with events scheduled throughout the entire month of October. After listening to this week’s Block Bluster! – and again, we apologize – get to drawin’!
