Fulfillment by Amazon Arbitrage 101

August 20, 2014

Ever browse books on Amazon and see the “Have one to sell?” link? Sounds like a real chore, doesn’t it? I mean, what are you going to earn, like, $2.00 per used book…? Then you’ve got to package each item individually, ship it to the customer, deal with the post office, deal with customer service, deal with items damaged in shipping…. That’s a nightmare, in my book. I like income streams that are as hands-free as possible. Which is what makes the “Fulfillment by Amazon” program (which I’ll refer to as FBA going forward) interesting. You ship a big ol’ box of all the items you have for sale to Amazon – new, used, books, household, beauty, grocery, etc. Amazon takes the orders and ships the items  to the customer for you (that makes them eligible for Amazon Prime free 2-day shipping, which customers love). They handle customer service, damaged items, everything. Essentially, all you have to do is get the items to Amazon and they send you payment every 2 weeks. I can do that…. I grabbed a bunch of books I’d finished reading and sent them off to Amazon to take the FBA program for a trial run. Their help files were sufficient in getting the items packed and labeled. It took about 2 hours. Once they got there… I waited for the sales to come in. The books I sent in weren’t chosen for being quick sellers or highly priced. They just happened to be what I had cluttering up my own shelves. So I wasn’t sure if they’d sell. That was part of the experiment! I priced the items so that they were the lowest priced in their condition / shipping. So if there was a “Like New” book with 2 day free Prime shipping for $11.98 and mine was also “Like New” I priced it at $11.97. The point, at least in this experiment, was to sell the books (or, really, to see if they would sell) so I tried to price them to move. FULFILLMENT BY AMAZON RESULTS That first month, the initial sale was made on 5/17/2014 and in total, $284.45 in sales were made. In June, another $336 in sales were made. Not bad for some used books I’d finished with. Since I didn’t have to ship and pack the individual items to each customer, reply to customer support questions, etc. it was easy money. But there’s only so many books in my home to sell.
