The God Who Whispers

September 09, 2014

Recently, I came across a movie on TV called “Finding Normal.†I only saw a few seconds of it before I changed the channel. However, in those few seconds, I heard one of the actors say,  “Most people are looking for a God who shouts instead of one who whispers.†That caught my attention and I thought of Elijah hiding from Ahab in a cave (1 Kings 19). 1 Kings 19:11b-12 (NKJV) says, “…And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; {12} and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.†Psalm 46:10a (NKJV) says, “Be still, and know that I am God;â€

We all have varying degrees of difficulty hearing or recognizing God’s voice. Perhaps it’s because we don’t put enough effort into listening. Instead, we expect Him to speak with a voice of thunder, as He has been known to do in the Bible. Perhaps much of the time He just wants to have our complete attention so He can whisper to us. I’m Dr. Bob. Many of our richest times come when we quietly wait on the Lord. These become fertile ground in which to hear from Him. Will you “Be still,†listen quietly, and know His voice? It may come as a peaceful, quiet sound, just for you.
