Self Esteem: Body Image

November 29, 2015

In this episode --Episode 21-- we discuss Self Esteem and Body Image.  We define body image and discuss its relationship to self esteem.  We also talk about how to improve body image.  Some places where you can get more information about body image and improving body image:

About-Face;

Young Women's Health; and

Do Something.

We also review the short story Born Free by Feminista Jones.  The story is a historical fiction based on the Tulsa Riots in 1921.

For our Historical Spotlight, we give a brief overview of the Tulsa Riots.  The Tulsa Riots is a little known historical event in American History that demonstrates the resilience and capabilities of Black Americans in the face of rampant, violent racism.  The information for this Historical Spotlight was found from many different sources including PBS, Tulsa Historical Society and Museum (which also has a virtual exhibit available on iTunes), The Greenwood Cultural Center, an article from The Root by Monee Fields-White, and an article from Ebony by Josie Pickens.

You can also look at books written by Hannibal B. Johnson: author, attorney, and consultant.

You can also check out the documentary Before They Die, which chronicles the lives of some of the survivors of the Tulsa Riots, and their quest for justice.
