MWM 13 Making Money? Actions Speak Louder Than Words

December 31, 2015

In this episode I answer the question: "How do I figure out what I'm good at that other people will pay for? What are my marketable skills?"

In short, my answer is that people put way too much stock in what people say and not enough in what people do. In other words, when you're trying to figure our your strengths in the real-world, you can use the actions and reactions of other people as a sort of mirror. What are people actually willing to pay you for? What do they come back for?

This doesn't mean you should pander, or change yourself. I'm against trying to be something you're not.

What it does mean though, is that we're often too close to a situation to have a really clear grasp on it. A lot of us try to market ourselves based on what's comfortable, or what other people say we could do. This means we'll just end up taking the easiest route, which usually means mediocrity.

Instead, you can use data in the real-world to see where your interests line up with what other people are will to trade you value for. That's how you start to learn where you can make a living and enjoy what you do.
