Why Do Some People Move You?

September 22, 2021

Why do some people move you? Opening up our skulls. I love comedians, Shelly Burman, Bill Cosby, and Norm MacDonald. The death of Norm MacDonald was a gut punch to me. As celebrities’ deaths can affect us, even if we don’t know them. Because what do we really know about a public person?

Why Do Some People Move You?

Norm MacDonald

We know only what they present. Did we know that O.J. Simpson would become a murderer? Let alone kill two people. No, I just knew he was one of the greatest running backs of our time and had an offensive line called the Electric Company. Did we know America’s Dad, Bill Cosby? We don’t know these folks.

You Think You Know, But You Don’t Know

But you can know the people in your proximity – or gain a great level of insight with a simple set of questions that are not threatening. The technique of what is your favorite movie? And who are your favorite comedians?

Old Time Movie Projector

The joke was the important item for Norm MacDonald, be funny, get the joke. Sympathy for his Leukemia diagnosis. MacDonald was concerned his illness would detract. Norm’s illness would be coloring everything. How people would approach every joke got forward from his diagnosis. That is the commitment to the cause. I respect that commitment. The commitment to the craft and everything else is damned. Even Norm’s mortality.

The Tools of Understanding

This tool of movies and comedians is a great tool to use as an instructor. When you use this tool, you will gain insight into people.

Warren Zevon

Warren Zevon, his craft and death. That was a guy’s death that kicked me in the shins because I found him authentic. Zevon owned everything. He wrote about some of it and labored over his craft of song writing.

This audit is a challenge for you to undertake. Who are your favorite comedians and what are your favorite movies? You are going to pull some things out of yourself.

What is Behind the Curtain?

See what may be behind the curtain. You are going to see some things and I am suggesting you take a hard position. That hard position is the one Norm MacDonald and Warren Zevon took, it’s all about the truth and art. Why do some people move you? This process may answer that question.

I leave you with a quote from Norm MacDonald, “You don’t know what to think now do ya?”
