We start On the Road right here in Deadwood, South Dakota with a colorful in-studio talk with the Deadwood Alive history troupe's own Martha "Calamity" Jane Cannary, actress and historian Jena Sierks. Jena discusses Jane's story, her place in Deadwood's history and the grit it takes to be a thespian in the Dakotas. Toni also takes listeners on a whirlwind tour of a few other notable tough gals from the Dakota Territory! Our Love is History feature this week is a courageous and heartfelt love with life itself, through the eyes of both comedy and tragedy, in the ongoing story of comedienne and actress Carol Burnett. Finally, the narrative from our upcoming book, Tales from The Heart of America, shares the treasure of Margo, waitress at the Goshen Diner in upstate New York, and her path from a forced marriage as a teenager in Russia, through hunger, abuse, neglect, traveling to America alone, and emerging from it all with a profound and enduring love for life and the people she meets everyday - a tale called Karma Margo.
