Unstoppable | Part 3

February 04, 2015

Pastor Tullian preached Part 3 of his “Unstoppable†sermon series on February 1st. His continued purpose for this series is to trace God’s flawless work of global grace expansion through flawed people. The reason this theme is helpful is because we typically think being good and pure and strong will qualify us to help other people. But the truth of the matter is that no one is good, no one is pure, and no one is strong. Our ministry to others becomes good when we acknowledge our badness and we live out of our brokenness. We should want others to see God’s strength and not our strength, through our weakness. If we piggyback off of what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 1:18-31, Acts is really the story of God choosing the foolish things in the world to shame the wise. It is the story of God choosing the weak things in the world to shame the strong. Acts is all about the mercy of God flowing out into the world through messed up people.

The text for this sermon is Acts 3:1-12, which shares the testimony of Peter and John as they are on their way to pray in the temple. They were stopped by a beggar who asked for money and Peter essentially said, “Look at us. Do we look like we have anything to offer you? In and of myself, I have nothing to give you. The only thing I have to give is Jesus. I am just one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread—and that is all I can do.†We can tend to fool ourselves into thinking we have a lot to offer, but we really have noting to offer but Jesus. This wrong-headed thinking will lead us to believe “we†are what is right with the world and “they†are what is wrong with the world. All to often, this is the kind of message people outside of the church are hearing from people inside the church. Thankfully failure does something to us that success can never do.
