Joe Satriani Stripped Of Artwork On Surfing with the Alien [Jon Robert Quinn]

December 11, 2019

In 1987, Joe Satriani released his ground breaking album Surfing with the Alien. Today, in 2019, he stripped of the artwork due to the cost to licensing for the Silver Surfer. When you visit Apple Music, Spotify or any other music streaming service, you will see that his infamous chrome guitar “The Chrome Boy” is now being used instead of the Marvel character. When I sat down with John Cuniberti last year, we got into talking about this album what went into recording it. Joe was young and trying to make it in the entertainment business at the time and recording with a guitar that would literally be falling apart between tracks. Yet, despite budget constraints and technical and mechanical difficulties, he still produced an album that has people talking 30 years later. What an absolute accomplishment. I myself have met with Joe on a couple occasions over the years and I can say that he is probably the nicest man I’ve ever met. He’s humble as hell and an incredible musician and songwriter.
