Welcome to Jobs in Pods I’m your host Peter Clayton. On today’s Jobs in Pods jobcast you’ll meet Veni Mudiam, Lead Software Engineer for Intelligent Control Systems, GE Transportation, and Rob Chambers, Embedded Software Manager with GE Transportation.

Listen Now!

Both Rob and Veni are based in Erie, PA, and design and develop the software for onboard locomotive systems, locomotive gateway interfaces, and provide various communication solutions such as Satellite, Cellular and Wi-Fi from locomotive to customer network.

GE Transportation’s Software and Optimization Solutions unit offers a powerful suite of digital tools such as the ecomagination qualified RailEdge Movement Planner, allowing clients to optimize hundreds of train schedules and train velocities so that more locomotives can use the same rail, move faster and save fuel all at the same time. GE has over 5000 software engineers on staff with annual software revenues of over $2.5 billion. GE expects a double-digit growth in the segment from now until 2015.

Questions we as Rob and Veni in this Jobcast:

1. Rob and Veni, welcome to Jobs in Pods. Rob, I’ve read that railroad freight volume is expected to double over the next 25 years. How does the software you and Veni are developing factor into this tremendous growth?

2. Rob, you’re currently responsible for leading the software organization though multiple concurrent developments. Can you tell us about some of the interesting projects you’re working on?

3. Veni, can you tell us about the software team you’re leading? What are you working on? How many people are on your team?

4. Veni, most of us have heard the term Ecomagination. What does this mean to you as a software engineer?

5. Rob you’ve been with GE for over 17 years. What do you like about the company and the culture that makes you want to stay?

6. Rob, please describe for us the ideal candidate for software engineer positions with GE Transportation? What background and qualifications do you look for?

7. Veni, what do you like about working for GE?

8. Rob, I doubt that there are many people listening to this that know, because of the work of software engineers such as yourself and Veni, that U.S. rail freight rates are the lowest in the world. I imagine it’s very gratifying to work on projects that have such a positive impact on our environment and our economy?
