عليا مالك محامية في مجال الحقوق المدنيةو صحفية. ولدت في بالتيمور لوالدين مهاجرين سوريين، بدأت حياتها القانونية كمحام في شعبة الحقوق المدنية التابعة لوزارة العدل الأمريكية.

بعد العمل في المجال القانوني في الولايات المتحدة ولبنان والضفة الغربية، و هي الحاصلة على شهادات من جامعات جونز هوبكنز وجورج تاون، حصلت على درجة الماجستير في الصحافة من جامعة كولومبيا.

وقد ظهرت تقريرها في العديد من الأماكن بما في ذلك The Nation, The New York Times, Salon, The Christian Science Monitor, and the Columbia Journalism Review.

في عام 2009، صدرأول كتاب لها "بلد يسمى أمريكا, A Country Called Amreeka, US History Retold Through Arab American Lives

كما صدر لها, إعادة كتابة تاريخ الولايات المتحدة من خلال حياة العرب الأمريكيين

 “US History Retold Through Arab American Lives”.

وهي محررة كتاب صوت الشاهد "باتريوت أكتس: روايات  ظلم ما بعد 11/9"

Bio

Alia Malek is an author and civil rights lawyer. Born in Baltimore to Syrian immigrant parents, she began her legal career as a trial attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. After working in the legal field in the U.S., Lebanon, and the West Bank, Malek, who has degrees from Johns Hopkins and Georgetown Universities, earned her master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University. Her reportage has appeared in many venues including The Nation, The New York Times, Salon, The Christian Science Monitor, and the Columbia Journalism Review. In 2009, her first book "A Country Called Amreeka, US History Retold Through Arab American Lives". She is the editor of the Voice of Witness book "Patriot Acts: Narratives of Post 9/11 Injustice". 2017 she published her latest book, The Home That Was Our Country – A Memoir of Syria.
