Isla & Ruby: Sex-Work is a Martiarchy (Rebraodcast)

July 05, 2020

This is a remastered rebroadcast of an episode I published in June 2019 with Isla & Ruby, discussing sex work at the intersections of race, disability, and asexuality. I’m bringing this conversation back to the front because it needs to be heard again. I am also offering my platform (podcast) to BIPOC folx interested in amplifying their voice—interviews, prerecorded audio, podcast episodes—I’m happy to rebroadcast on your terms.
From the original episode description: Isla is young, away from home, and about to get married, when she realizes there must be more to life than this. She’s already been making some money doing online sex-work, when, enter Ruby, she’s introduced to the possibilities available through full-service sex-work. Ruby had been working through an agency and showed Isla the ropes, a sort of mentorship. Eventually, Ruby went off to do independent sex-work and Isla has remained with the agency for the community and experience. They’re both good friends and here to share their individual takes on sex-work. Isla talks about what it’s like being an asexual Black woman and a sex-worker, and Ruby discusses her invisible physical disabilities and how they intersect with her sex-work. Together, they have found ways to help one another and advocate for healthy and informed ways to enter the matriarchy of sex-work.
