Lamar Tyler: Marriage, Business, and Infusionsoft

June 03, 2015

A business partnership is a lot like a marriage. Sometimes a marriage can inspire a business concept. In this Infusioncast Joshua Millage talks with Lamar Tyler about the family support company he built with his wife, Ronnie, using Infusionsoft’s capabilities to integrate all of their platforms into an efficient system.

Lamar and Ronnie started a marriage and parenting blog, Black and Married with Kids (BMWK), with the idea that it might become a business venture. They were juggling a variety of applications that were not integrated when Lamar discovered Infusionsoft. He viewed the demo, then spoke with customer support, and became convinced this was the solution to streamlining their business. His first priority then was to make Infusionsoft pay for itself.

Having an integrated system allowed BMWK to increase profits by designing a shopping cart with intuitive upselling, creating post-purchase follow-up email campaigns to track product deliveries and customer satisfaction, and generating testimonials for promotional purposes.

BMWK had established an enthusiastic social media following through Facebook and Twitter and wanted to capitalize on that. Social media allowed them to provide personal, direct support for people in family situations similar to their own. Infusionsoft’s capabilities for automating tasks, generating lead magnets for social media, and managing email campaigns allowed their customer base to expand without becoming unmanageable.

Lamar advises businesses to be flexible and innovative, because changes will occur in distribution channels. BMWK maintains contact with their audience through multiple conduits in case something fails, and they watch for new media developments.

For your project to become a successful business venture, you have to generate profits. BMWK holds challenges and giveaways that bring in new contacts, and they sell DVDs, eBooks, and other products through their website. They also get ideas from seeing what other businesses are doing with Infusionsoft.

Lamar’s tips for people building a business as a couple include establishing a code of conduct and trusting each other to do what is expected of you. Address problems honestly and directly, and seek outside help for an unbiased view of issues you may not even know are there. Also take time to remember you are in a relationship first and nurture that through scheduled time together as well as reading and study about both relationships and business.
