Irwin Kula on Disruptive Spiritual Innovation

August 01, 2014

In this episode of the connection podcast I am speaking with Irwin Kula.  I was introduced to Irwin by previous guest Saul Kaplan.  It was an episode that was always going to happen.  I don't mean because of plans and scheduling, I am talking about all of the intriguing co-incidences, overlaps and of course connections that transpired before we arranged the interview. I am really pleased that it did.

Why? I often talk about living your best life and doing stuff that matters.  I will talk about life as an adventure and making things happen.  Well, this conversation covers all of this.  Whether you are interested in business, self development, spirituality, creativity and innovation, we discuss it all.

Irwin shares the powerful pivotal moments that profoundly impacted his life, what they meant to him and why, and of course what he planned to do about it.  I found myself completely engrossed as Irwin shared his moment of clarity.   The point when he understood the job that he had to get done.

"I know the job to get done was to help people flourish.   I always found myself most connected with the people most disconnected from the community."

This really is one of those episodes that you keep in your favourites and listen back to a number of times, as each time I have listened to it I have taken something more from it.

Things like -

"The product is the wisdom"

and

"Taking values as well as value, seriously"

We discuss how often we are taught about tradition, and not about innovation.  We review the quality of questions we ask ourselves, personally and professionally.  Such as -

"What is the ongoing impact beyond the moment of purchase?"

and

"Are people flourishing more by being part of our community than if they were not part of it?"

We also talk about storytelling versus data, authenticity, transparency and we even discuss what infinite pie is all about.

Irwin explains why he would like to connect with Sal Khan of the Khan Academy and why I should connect with Clayton Christensen and Adam Braun.  Let's see if we can make this happen in the future.
