Topic: Deb and I discuss what the posture of extension is, what it means, why we and our horses choose it and what purpose it serves. By thinking in terms of posture instead of conformation, we lift the limits from ourselves as riders and from our horse’s true potential. No matter what conformational challenges our horse has, we can help our horse alter posture and internal coordination during motion through training. By changing coordination, our horse can maximize athletic potential or restore soundness or overcome chronic behavioral issues. The work means that we pay attention to our horse’s chosen posture during work. Instead of just getting our horse to perform a task or “look right” by framing in the neck, we learn how to help our horse change coordination within the work we already do.
