Topic: Lunging is a groundwork training technique that is probably as old as riding horses! We all may think we know how to lunge a horse but the truth is that the only thing that really defines lunging is our horse traveling a circle around us. There are a million things happening while our horse is moving on a lunge line. In this discussion we talk about those millions of details and what we are really trying to achieve by lunging our horse at all. It is our intention, our concepts, our strategies, how we use our body and our tools and how our horse is responding in the moment, always changing, that really makes lunging either a very useful tool of training or a way to make our horse more fearful, defensive or physically unbalanced. The act of getting our horse to go around us in a circle can do nothing, can make things worse or can help our horse learn to feel better in both mind and body. What makes the difference is our understanding and how we communicate with our horse while lunging.
