Jam 17 – Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran

June 01, 2016

Skip ahead to 4:48 to get straight to the lesson.
This one is for Howie! She wanted us to cover this song a long time ago. And I hesitated, because I hated it. But I changed my mind, and now I love it. Now I have my hot toddy, and I’m jamming it with you.
It’s pretty simple, I go over the basic chords and strumming pattern, then I show you some extra fiddly bits you can do to make it sound nicer. THEN I go over the solo! What a great solo, it sticks to the pentatonic scale and does a few tricks that are applicable to almost any other song.
There’s a surprise on the Youtube video clip – I inserted a live show of my jam session playing at Moondyne Joe’s in Fremantle. I also have a second camera on my hand so you can watch the chord changes.
Caution before the live section of the podcast – we are no Ed Sheerans. We have a lot of fun singing this, but we can’t sound like him. So if this song is really really important to you and you don’t want it sullied, maybe you should skip jamming with us to this, put the capo on the 2nd fret, and play it with Ed Sheeran
