#007 Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens & Purple Rain - The Gaff

May 05, 2016

THIS WEEK ON THE GAFF:
We finally hit Episode 7 and so we talk about Episode VII. Star Wars is back in our lives. Plus, in the wake of his death, we devote some time to talk about Prince and more specifically, his first film; Purple Rain.

WEEKLY REWIND:
Sams saw Eye in the Sky this week, the last film starring the late Alan Rickman. Luke's been catching up on quality TV; American Crime Story S1 and Better Call Saul S2. Both the boys saw Jungle Book this week... but only one saw the whole thing start to finish.

IMPROMPTU TOPIC: VALE PRINCE
Jason Mobbs-Green joins us in front of the microphones today as we discuss the passing of Prince. All three of us watched Purple Rain this past week; Luke and Jason doing so for the first time. We talk about our familiarity with the prolific musician's work before waxing lyrical about the melodramatic musical/concert film.

We cover our first exposure to Prince, the power of the film's soundtrack, the theatricality of Prince's character The Kid, the domestic violence present in the film's narrative, the take on the famous 'Who's on first, what's on second' routine, Apollonia's constant crying, creepy hand puppets, and whether or not Morris Day was really so bad after all.

Purple Rain is currently available on Stan for those that want to check it out. It is however, not related to The Colour Purple.

TRAILERS OF THE WEEK:
Jason provides an impromptu interlude, giving us our first theme for the Trailer Trash segment. Then we jump into this week's new trailers.

THE FOUNDER sees Michael Keaton play the devious salesman that snagged the McDonald's name for himself. After his turn in Birdman, and losing the Oscar to Eddie Redmayne, this looks like a fun one.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE gets a 2nd trailer and with it, more love from Sams and Luke for the simpler time during the 90's that was full of popcorn blockbusters.

THE INFILTRATOR sees an undercover Walter White... I mean, Bryan Cranston, take on Pablo Escobar and the Colombian drug trade.

We also briefly recommend checking out the trailers for MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, JASON BOURNE and EQUALS.

TOPIC OF THE WEEK: STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS
OCD or happy coincidence, we find ourselves talking about Episode VII for our Episode 7. Jason details all the Star Wars memorabilia, collectibles and paraphernalia in his home studio. Luke chimes in with a handful of Star Wars 'fun facts' throughout.

We each talk about what Force Awakens means to us as lifelong Star Wars fans. Sams and Jason describe the madness of trying to buy toys on Force Friday. Sams recounts the long wait at his midnight screening of the film.

Did we clap at the end of the prequel trilogy? How about Force Awakens? Do we think it's a good thing that Ep I Puppet Yoda got replaced digitally for the blu-ray release? Will we tackled a debate episode on the film LABYRINTH? Did a new Star Wars film get people back into the cinemas? These questions are answered within.

The marketing for this franchise warrants discussion, including the secret of what happened to Luke Skywalker. Audio talk reveals the blending of old and new for the 'Rey' line from Obi-Wan and Mark Hamill's voiceover for the trailer.

The future is ripe with several Star Wars films on the horizon. Does that mean another trilogy? Just give us an Obi-Wan film already! Will James Cameron's AVATAR sequels derail the box office hopes of Disney's juggernaut?

Jason shares some insights gained from watching the making of on the blu-ray extras, particularly about Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca and the practical effects used on set.

Are Maz and Snoke too CG for this practical world? How does the film compare to the prequels in this way?
