I have been asked am I a software reseller or am I an internet broadcaster. I am questioned about my FrugalTech videos on YouTube, The Business Computing Weekly podcast, The blog articles I post and how all this helps or hinders FrugalBrothers Software.

A bit of history here. I began making business related YouTube videos in 2008. The purpose was to draw traffic to my website. This idea occurred to me after a failed radio advertising campaign that cost several thousands of dollars. This worked as I saw my traffic increase from a handful of daily visitors to several hundred per day.

The videos led me to live streaming a show everyday on Justin.Tv, which I embedded on my website. Again, I saw a jump in visitors. I also published tech related blogs.

However, the traffic I was receiving did not convert to new business for me. I was attracting the wrong kind of visitor. Too much of what I was posting did not relate to network security software, small business owners, or IT professionals.

I consider my work in social media a work in progress. I make plenty of mistakes, I have been down the wrong path a few times, but I have learned from it all. Below are are the tools I am using, why I am using it, and how I am using it.

#1 I am carefully working on thought leadership in business computing, small business focusing on Network Security.

#2 I am being careful to create content that is much more focused on network security especially in my blogs and podcast. I may have a smaller audience, but one that is more likely to have interest in my products.

#3 I am more careful about what platform is the best match for my message. I know longer approach the different platforms the same.

#4 The reason I use Twitter: Twitter is about sharing content with my followers that should be of interest to them. retweeting good content. This is not the best place for marketing , but for building gaining thought leadership.

#5 The reason I use FaceBook: Inow have a FaceBook Fan page for Business Computing Weekly, which fairly new, but gaining likes quickly. It is also a great place to meet people who listen to the podcast, and share content.

#6 The reason I use Google+: I think a lot of people on Google+ tend to appreciate more technical material. Google+ has been a great place to share links to my blog articles that are posted on FrugalBrothers

#7 The reason I use YouTube: I no longer link provide links to my videos there. Here I am free to experiment, or discuss other tech related videos that suit my interests. I use YouTube to promote my FrugalTech brand.

#8 The reason I use LinkedIn: This is a great resource to post links to our podcast, and blog articles that are pertinent to network security. I can see any referrals to my site from there.

#9 The reason I podcast. Unlike a live stream, or a YouTube video, our podcast doesn’t require “screen time†You can download and listen at your leisure. It’s on demand radio. My podcasts can be more indepth, than a video can. You know just by the title it is about making money with technology, and the business side of technology.

#10 The reason I created a new website. My old website was built on Joomla, It was unwieldy, stuffed full of articles and posts that was not specific enough for our mission. The layout was convoluted. The bounce rate was astronomical. It lacked focus on our core mission.

#11 The reason I am posting very specific content to my blog each week. I am building a great library of articles that focus entirely around network security and IT administration. This is bringing visitors who stay, and look around, I have seen a 50% increase in visitors to my sight since the relaunch last spring.

#12 I might Live Stream again. I am carefully considering livestreaming the recording of Business computing Weekly with chat room in the near future. I think it would a fun way to connect with our audience.
