Shifting Focus for Continuing Success

July 03, 2014

I’m very enthusiastic about the increase in business we have been experiencing at Frontline Support Solutions. In my past few posts, I’ve been talking about some of the government contracting opportunities that have become available. The government had held off for three quarters, but they are now starting to green light projects in order to spend budgeted funds for the current fiscal year. This is partly because the government needs to spend their allotted budget or they will not receive those funds in the next cycle.

Because of the government sequester last year, I’ve been reconsidering my strategic plan for the continued growth of my company. The sequester had a huge negative impact on everyone—while I don’t have control over the economy, I do have control over the actions that I can take to make sure my business will weather the storm and come out stronger at the end. From a small business standpoint, this has pushed me to consider my options. Should I continue to focus my efforts on the federal government, or should I step out of my comfort zone and venture into the commercial world? It will probably put me in a better position to overcome economic challenges in the future if I were to focus on commercial ventures.

This is why I have been devoting time and effort into designing a new security division that focuses on the commercial sector. Our goal is to provide construction companies with real-time security monitoring using the latest technology. We are also able to provide our waste management and recycling services commercially instead of just limiting them to federal projects. The main challenge is going to be learning how the procurement process works. I’m a novice when it comes to solicitations in private industry. Up until now, we have been set up for doing federal government work. We are used to preparing proposals based on government requirements and regulations.

Fortunately, I was recently selected to participate in Operation Hand Salute, which is a business development program sponsored and organized by AT&T. I am confident that this program will allow me to gain insight into private industry from the perspective of a large corporation. This will be a valuable learning experience. I’m most looking forward to learning how to strategically pursue a commercial business that rivals the success we had previously achieved at the federal level.
