Business Leadership After the Military

April 24, 2014

Transitioning out of the military into civilian life can be tricky in any case, but it can be especially difficult if you’re trying to lead people who don’t have your training. My passion is helping veterans who have the entrepreneurial spirit become successful business owners. I came across a company called Performance Revealed, run by Amanda Taylor and Jobim Zapico. I had the pleasure of sitting down with them for the last few podcasts and discussing how they can help our veterans go from wanting to start a business, to starting one that has a lasting and impactful impression.

When I personally came out the military, I was pretty lucky. I got to go directly into a ready-made, family business as the operations officer. But not every veteran has that same opportunity. Many of them are starting fresh, completely on their own. That’s why consulting companies like Performance Revealed exist. They can help our veterans learn how to lead, not just fellow military men, but their civilian employees.

Jobim puts it this way: nobody goes to school to learn to manage people. They go to school for whatever field of study interests them. But when push comes to shove, the way your manage your team is going to determine how successful and profitable your business is. Jobim talks about military theorist von Clausewitz who believed in giving your team the load you want them to carry and empowering them to figure it out on their own. If you put people in a small box and micromanage every move, they are going to feel constrained and ultimately, you aren’t going to get their best work. But if you tell them you believe in them and guide them along the way, the work will get done successfully and team will be better for it.

Let’s face it. People make mistakes. You and your team are going to make mistakes along the way, especially when you are just starting out. The key is to learn from them and to garner as much knowledge from others who have gone before you. Take what you’ve learned in your military and combat training and use that to lead your team, but remember to seek out the expertise of people like Jobim and Amanda when you need it.  Performance Revealed specializes in consulting, coaching, reconstruction and even hosts seminars.
