In this Let’s Talk Transitions! podcast, Jennifer Rea chats with Dr. Ellen Moore about her book, Grateful Nation: Student Veterans and the Rise of the Military Friendly Campus which was published by Duke University Press in 2017.
The conversation centers on Dr. Moore’s findings from narratives with Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans at five California college campuses. Dr. Moore shares strategies and tips for military family service providers to assist student veterans as they prepare for the transition into higher education.
Guest Bios
Ellen Moore received her PhD in Social and Cultural Studies in 2014 from the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. She has taught courses in Anthropology, Education and Social Welfare at the University of San Francisco and at San Francisco State University, and courses for transfer and re-entry students at the University of California, Berkeley. She is a Fellow at the Slow Science Institute and a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for the Study of Societal Issues at the University of California, Berkeley and works as a social worker for recent immigrants at La Clinica de La Raza in Oakland, CA. Her book, Grateful Nation: Student Veterans and the Rise of the Military Friendly Campus, was published by Duke University Press in 2017. She has maintained a clinical social work practice for the past 30 years, specializing in treatment of psychological trauma.
