Jesus GoatTalk about Invite Sunday (Oct 31) Matthew 12:38-42 JESUS IS THE G.O.A.T. What is Jesus saying here- He’s saying to these Pharisees that want proof that he’s already given them proof enough and that they shouldn’t need any more proof. He’s done enough. He calls them adulterous for wanting a sign and says- you’ll get the same sign as Jonah- a man who goes into the deep for 3 days and comes out and tells you to start living for God and not your sin. And then he says- I’m greater than Jonah. I’m greater than Solomon. Just watch what happens. I think we all at some point have tested God- Either we tested him with our mouth, our actions. We’ve prayed prayers that we wanted to use as a test to see if God was real or he would movePeople are always enamored with people who are the “Best” at something- consequently, the amount of people who are, is much less than when you could be the best in your town. We follow a savior who is the greatest of all time- he is the man, the one, the one and only. Title of Todays message- Jesus is the G.O.A.T.

Jesus didn’t have to give them proof- he was the GOAT - Jesus Goat

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. On numerous occasions, Jesus did in fact give them many proofs. Water into wine, healing the sick, rasing the dead. Fulfilling prophecy- but it wasn’t enoughLook back at John chapter 9- this man, who was born blind was healed by Jesus- and the response of the pharisees was to challenge his healing, accuse his parents, and then cast him out for testifying the truthTheir reply to him was- john 9:28 Then they reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples. 29 We know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where He is from.”When Jesus says- “an adulterous generation seeks after a sign” he’s using word language here that shows the relationship that Israel had with Jehovah- namely a bride and her husbandSame imagery as the church and Jesus in the new testamentAnd to use this adulterous language is to say- you’re cheating on your spouse- you’re not sticking with the relationshipThe adultery of the Jews before Jesus was that they didn’t trust God- they didn’t keep idols out of their lives and worshipped other gods- God called them adulterers for this- The Jews of the OT had many many signs to show them that God was God- (Manna, parting of the red sea, floating axe head, parting of the Jordan, water from a rock,  people healed, destruction of armies, sun standing still, the firey furnace, Daniel in the Lions den etc etc etc) Jesus is saying- How many more signs do you need bro? do you not remember what I’ve already done? Your heart has already turned?1 Corinthians 1:22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; So he says- the only sign you’re going to get is the sign of Jonah- The people of Ninevah repented when Jonah told them to- and they had much less evidence than Jesus had given these pharisees- and they had turned from evil- but why not now?Jesus says- I’ll give you one more sign- but its going to be me dying and raising from the deadWhat does it mean to you?Are you holding Jesus hostage because of something he hasn’t done for you?People do this often- they put a limit on what they will respond to God- until “this” or they will serve him until “This” – they are wanting some sort of “sign” they want more ‘proof’ I’ve seen it more times than I can count- not serving Jesus because of something that happened to them, something wont happen for them, OR even worse- seeing God do something and then not serving him- On facebook seeing people enjoying what they had prayed for Its an adu...
