EE006 - how to be a road warrior (without getting beat up)

May 27, 2013

In this episode learn how I manage travel as a speaker on the road. I recorded this show right after stepping off a cross-country flight. I think you will learn some neat tricks that will help you be fully present for your clients, give your best, while also taking care of yourself.

If you have ever felt completely wiped out, or distracted when you know you should be ready to give 100% to your client, then you will like this.

Here are the problems I’m addressing:

  • Worrying about business when you are being paid to be with the client.
  • How to keeping your energy up so you can deliver 100% for your audience.
  • How to stay on top of business even though you are traveling.

I use four categories of time:

Client time. This is the time when I can completely focused on meeting people (and remembering names), delivering my best stuff, and paying attention to what I am learning. This time zone is divided into Pre (I will cover this in another episode – it’s all the steps on my check list to ensure I have a great event), During, and Post time for each event.

Creative time. These are the pockets of time when I know I will be in a creative mood. I need to plan for these and catch them. I don’t want to be wasting time on email or updating Twitter – this is total focus time (even if it is only 30 minutes).

Catch up time. These are the zones when I check email, touch base with my office, and work on client work for upcoming events. This is usually lower-energy time (definitely not Creative time).

Chill time. This is veg-out time for me to relax and stop thinking so much! I usually travel with a book or magazine to chill out with. Going for a run or workout in the gym is perfect chill time. I listen to a podcast, exercise, and feel great. It’s always amazing to me how much difference 30 minutes can make to my mood and energy.

If you have ever run out of steam on a trip, or feel beat up and exhausted when you return this simple system can help.

Let me know in the comments what you do so that you can be a rock star on your road trips.
