The Eigencast 009: Rubrik

February 11, 2016

Chris Wahl, Technical Evangelist, Rubrik
Justin talks to Chris Wahl, Technical Evangelist at Rubrik about the company’s approach to backup and recovery, and what a technical evangelist actually is.
They discuss the pain involved with using traditional software approaches to backup and recovery, and how being able to restore data is the most important thing.
Getting a good backup is the first step, and Rubrik uses a declarative policy model (I need to protect these things, and restore them this fast, and archive for this long) instead of the traditional imperative model (back up these files, at this time, in this order, to that thing there).
But restoring is the important part, and the first step in being able to restore (apart from having a good backup in the first place) is being able to find what you want to restore. Rubrik has a robust metadata index and search function so you can find your data quickly and easily.
Rubrik has also announced that they now support SQLServer natively, and can back it up whether it’s on a virtual machine or physical machine. This is just the first of many planned announcements for Rubrik in 2016 as they expand from focusing on virtual machines to backup and recovery of just about everything.
Stay tuned for outtakes at the end!
