How Did Jesus Fulfill Expectations of Where Christ Would Come From?

May 05, 2014

No one person has ever brought about more controversy and dispute than Jesus Christ.  He recognized that His person wouldn’t bring a perfect unity and understanding of who He was.  He said He came to bring a sword of division.

When He was walking on this earth the whole of society heard of Him.  Everyone had either heard Him teach with their own ears, or saw Him work miracles with their own eyes, or they may have heard the news and rumors of the great and many miracles that He was doing.  He was making the supernatural look so natural.

In that time the very mention of His name would bring about arguments.  Everyone wanted to know for certain who he was.  Many people, many views, many opinions.  Some said He was a great new prophet… others said He was an old-time prophet come back to life.  Some claimed that He was just a liar.  Others believed He was probably a lunatic and devil possessed.  Those who had received the great revelation knew without a doubt that He was indeed the Christ… the Messiah… the Anointed, the flesh of the living God. In our day He is still the topic of great debate.

So in The Gospel of John Chapter 7 the great debate documented of the multitudes of people trying to figure out if Jesus can actually be the Christ according to the scriptures (or their understanding of them).  According to popular belief The Christ had to come out of Bethlehem and of the lineage of David the King.  There would be no other way for Him to sit upon the throne of His father David.  It was also well-known that Jesus spent a lot of His time growing up around the region of the Sea of Galilee (also known as the Sea of Tiberias).

When  Jesus came to Jerusalem the southern Jews, the city folk, the more civilized of the Jews expected their Messiah to come from Bethlehem and act more like them.  Jesus gained His popularity in the northern country around Galilee.  Galilean folks were perceived to be ignorant and unlearned… in the eyes of the Judean.  Nobody would expect the Messiah to come from Hillbillyville.

John 7

41  Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?

42  Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

52  They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
