Don’t Look Back. Look Up.

April 02, 2014

In the 4th of 5 messages taught at the Build Conference Pastor Sam Emory of Apostolic Tabernacle in Merced, Ca moves deep into the subject of a Christian’s need to find the balance between their ministration and their personal spiritual health.

Often times we try to focus so intently on the work God has set before us for growing His kingdom, that we are unable to focus on the one thing that we should be focused on… the King.

The work that is set before us is never-ending.  It is more than one man, one family, or even one church will ever be able to handle in a lifetime.  The work is the Lord’s.  This is why he fills us with His spirit, so that He may be able to do the work through us.  A problem persists when we leave God out of the picture and begin to try to do a work for Him, and not with Him.Mark 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

By attempting to do these things on behalf of God through the power of our own determination and the strength of our seemingly indomitable human spirit, we run the risk of losing the passion we began with.  Though our intentions were good and our hearts began in the right place, we must constantly check our spirit for imbalances, fearing that we’ve traded our first love… for just a great work ethic.

We cause an imbalance to occur when we overextend ourselves by attempting to minister in areas that God has reserved for Himself.

By stepping into areas that we were not called to go into we can open ourselves up to wounds that we were not prepared to  receive.  We rush into battles that we were not prayerfully guarded against.  The tragic flaw in our human thinking is that because the work must continue, we neglect to take the time to allow the Lord to bind up these wounds, and unknowingly refuse to allow Him to do His work in us.  Luke 9:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.     Maybe, because we have determined to never look back we equate that with never looking at anything but the plow in our hands and the field beneath our feet.  He did however, desire us to look up.

Psalm 121:1-8

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.  2  My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.  3  He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.  4  Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.  5  The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.  6  The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.  7  The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.  8  The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Where ever you are I want to encourage you to take time to let the Lord help you.
