11. Tiki or Not Tiki…

April 16, 2014

Trader Jenny & Trader Tam could blab all day about our love for delicious tiki drinks. But it’s time now to delve deep into the beautiful culture of tiki! With the vast knowledge of our pal, Naomi Alper, this episode explores the history of famous California tiki bars such as Don the Beachcomber, Trader Vic’s, and Tiki Ti, and we also sing the praises of some great tiki watering holes like the Tonga Hut, Trader Sam’s, Tonga Room, Smuggler’s Cove, and the Mai-Kai. We also discuss the difference between tiki and Polynesian pop and highlight a few important touchstones of the tiki world such as “Tales of the South Pacific”, Tiki Oasis, Oceanic Arts Suppliers, and the tiki marketplace at Don the Beachcomber in Huntington Beach. Grab a mai tai and get comfortable! And be sure to keep an eye out for Sven Kirsten’s new book “Tiki Pop”, which will be released in June!
