Energy prices are volatile and promise to be even higher in the future.  

To mitigate our energy costs and to provide a higher level of self-reliance at our homestead we are using several types of newer wood burning technologies, the most exciting of these being Rocket Mass Heater technologies.

Rocket mass heaters are more energy efficient than any other form of wood burning heat (burning as much as 7 times less wood to heat the same space), and output much fewer pollutants.  They are much less fussy about the type of fuel that they burn, and can keep heating your home for days from a single fire.
