You Don’t Have To Work To Eat

February 11, 2013
This entry is part 11 of 20 in the seriesWhy Does God Work?

No sweat no sweet: Adam and Eve – as a result of their disobedience to God’s instructions – contracted this curse just before they got kicked out of the garden of Eden. Fortunately, as you will come to understand in this post, this curse shouldn’t be your reality anymore as a child of God. This Adamic curse doesn’t have to work in your life because of Jesus’ death on the Cross of Calvary.

And I need to say this too: when God struck a covenant with Abraham, He actually didn’t break this curse. Note what God said to the people under the Abrahamic covenant:

“The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hand. You will lend to many nations  but will borrow  from none.â€

~Deuteronomy 28:12

Essentially, what God said here is: ‘Your food is still going to come from your work; the difference now is I’m going to bless what you do.’ God promised to bless their kneading troughs,  their baskets, their going out and their coming in. Nevertheless, they still needed to work.

Jesus, however, actually actually shattered the ‘no sweat no sweet’ Adamic curse. He freed us from that particular curse so that today, we don’t need to have our food come from our work.

Here’s a very radical statement: You don’t have to work to eat!

Under the Adamic curse they had to work to eat : ‘From the sweat of your brow you will have your daily bread’.  Under the Abrahamic covenant they had to work : ‘God said, I will bless the work of your hands, I will bless your kneading troughs, I will bless your baskets, I will bless your going out and your coming in’; or, in essence, ‘I will supply for you through your handwork, I will supply for you through the tilling of the soil’.

But when Jesus came, He broke the curse. And He taught us a prayer:

“Give us this day our daily breadâ€

~Matthew 6:11

In other words, no longer will your daily bread come from the sweat of your brow. Instead, under the New Covenant installed through the blood of Jesus Christ, your daily provisions will now come as a gift from your Heavenly Father.

The curse is no longer operational in your life, thanks to Jesus. Simply ask your heavenly Father, give me this day my daily bread.
