Episode 54 – Sports Stadium Disasters

September 21, 2016

Welcome back to DisasterCast. In this episode I talk about Sports Stadium Disasters. Stadium disasters are highly emotive, often with attempts to cast one party or another as villains. This can extend to treating crowds as if they are malevolent entities, and innocent spectators as if they are hooligans. It's also tempting to think that the only way to defend the fans is to place the blame elsewhere - with the police and stadium officials.

I talk about two particular accidents - Ellis Park Stadium in 2001, and Hillsborough Stadium in 1989.
