Application Developers Under Pressure to Create Self-Service Analytics

May 30, 2013

Despite the growing complexity of big data and the methods to analyze it, self-service analytics and business intelligence tools are hitting the market in droves. That's because an offshoot of the big data blitz is that appetite for data analysis, reporting and visualization has exploded, according to Peter Evans. Evans, a product technologist consultant for business intelligence and analytics for Dell Software, said that the IT department doesn't want to spend their time creating reports and visualizations, and data scientists are too expensive. So it's up to software application makers to ensure that the business users that want data analytics quickly can do it themselves. In this interview with Data Informed staff writer Ian B. Murphy, Evans discusses the shrinking difference between business intelligence and analytics, the state of self service data visualizations, and how the growing complexity of big data can be a very good thing for business users.
