January 27, 2015

Do you want to know what 2014 meant for affiliate marketing? Are you looking for ways to build more affiliate friendly programs in 2015 that are still profitable for you? Using information about what worked last year could give you an extra edge over others in the industry in the months to come.

If you want a concise overview of the 2014 affiliate year and tips for 2015, then invest 20 minutes to listen to this edition of Chaos Makes Sense where your host Kimberly Henrie interviews Matt Frary, CEO of SmarterChaos and Shane Graper, Digital Sales Manager at SmarterChaos.com. In this edition they review their 2014 Affiliate Year including industry changes and successful programs.

What Happened in the Industry in 2014?

The episode begins with explaining Shane's role at SmarterChaos, and talking about the renaissance SmarterChaos went through in 2014 and how that improved customer focus and helps publishers find the best fits for their marketing needs. Matt goes on to add that this offers an advocate for the advertiser as a client as well as the affiliate.

Shane goes on to share why he likes to monitor the evolution and history that changes within the industry along the way, and uses the emergence of changing commerce exchanges as an example.

Matt then chimes in with an example of how Yahoo plans to evolve to meet the needs of its clients in 2015. Shane adds that another evolving technology is the tracking of attribution, which lets advertisers know the performance of a particular campaign as well as other pertinent details.

Tracking of attribution allows you to see the entire consumer journey of a client, taking the chaos out of the marketing.

What Were Some Successful Programs in 2014?

Next Shane talks about some of the more successful programs in 2014. First he goes through a list of elements that exist for a program to qualify as a success. The list includes everything from using coupons to supporting your brand, but most importantly as Matt points out, being open minded about using other methods.

Working from home in a comfortable environment has as much chance as succeeding as working in a corporate environment.

One company that really took off from mid-way through 2014 until the end of the year was Jewelset, which Shane says capitalized on pretty much everything in the list that he shared.

Building a More Profitable Program for 2015

Going forward, Shane gives some advice to build out a more affiliate-friendly yet profitable program for 2015. He not only discusses what worked in past years, but he also predicts what will work for the next year based on how the industry is evolving.

During the podcast, Matt and Shane address these questions:

- What resources can help me spot upcoming trends?
- How can I know what my competitors are doing?
- What can Affiliate Summit do for my programs?
