How Retargeting Can Improve Your Revenue

December 08, 2014

Do you want to bring back past visitors who have shown an interest in your products? Are you looking for a way to improve the effectiveness of your traffic generating marketing activities? Retargeting your past visitors with fresh advert copy could be one highly effective option for your online business.

If you are looking for those secrets on how to get the most out of your affiliate links then invest 20 minutes to listen to this edition of Chaos Makes Sense where your host Kimberly Henrie interviews Matt Frary, CEO of SmarterChaos and Michael Rich, CoFounder & Advertiser Director for NAMoffers. In this edition they are talking about retargeting and how it can support your business.

What Is Retargeting?

Michael begins this episode with an explanation of retargeting. He describes it as a process of when an advertiser or product owner has a retargeting pixel or code on their website that tags users when they land on a page. After they have left the advertiser’s site; these users are served more adverts directing them back to the advertiser or product owner.

Adverts can be tailored based on a number of factors including what products have been viewed and other visitor behaviours.

Matt agrees that retargeting is a great option for online businesses. In the old days (5 – 10 years ago), advertisers would use banners, search engines and affiliate marketing to attract traffic. Then the visitors would leave the site without buying a product and possibly go to a competitor.

With retargeting, you have the option to bring them back to make a purchase through your site.

Who Has The Ability To Retarget Customers Online?

Michael states that anyone who has a landing page or website can use retargeting to bring back customers to their site. There are several suppliers who can provide businesses with retargeting services and software. Adroll is one company, but other sites like Facebook and YouTube also have retargeting programs on their sites.

Adroll is a highly effective retargeting source because it has millions of sites that it can host the retargeting media on.

Of course, retargeting is only effective if the visitor’s browser is accepting cookies. Retargeting is also in its infancy, so strategies are still in their early stages.

The Advantages Of Retargeting

Retargeting is an effective online marketing method because it is bringing back customers when they have shown a strong interest in your products and when they are ready to make a purchase. Also, as Michael states, you can retarget your past customers to market complimentary products to increase their lifetime value.

During the podcast Matt and Michael answer these questions:

- Why are advertisers profiting from retargeting?
- What are some of the early best practices?
- How many advertisers are using retargeting?
- What problems could arise when affiliates are used in the marketing funnel?
