CUE ONE GO-Theatre Show

A Beginner's Guide For Actors - C1G 013

June 13, 2015

Whether you're a crusty veteran of the stage or someone who would like to learn more about the process, this episode can be helpful for you as we go step by step through a production. We'll start with finding the right show to audition for and detail all the way through the rehearsals to the performances and beyond. If you know this stuff already, it's always good to review. If you're new to the exciting world of live performance, this will help get you prepared to jump right in. In episode 13, Michael rides solo while Toni tends to her busy summer teen camp schedule. Here are some of the things that are covered.

KNOW YOUR STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

THE AUDITION
Get plenty of sleep the night before
DO NOT skip meals the day of
If you are singing for an audition, stay away from dairy products and sweets
Avoid sucking raw lemons
Straight water can also be detrimental
Avoid ice and cold beverages just before auditioning
Dress appropriately for the audition

YOU GOT A PART!
Now it’s time to meet your cast, crew, and Directors. Here is a breakdown of what you will likely encounter personnel wise, but again, this is based on my own personal experience and in no way represents the way every show is run. Here is a basic list of the hierarchy:

Theatre Manager
Director
Assistant Director
Music Director
Stage Manager
Prop Master
Choreographer
Sound Technician
Lighting Technician
Costumer
Makeup Artist

THE REHEARSAL PROCESS

DO:
Get to rehearsal on time
Start learning your part immediately
Get to know your cast mates and crew
Learn from others
Do as the Director asks the first time
Give 100% of yourself

DO NOT:
Do not bring your personal drama through the theatre door
Do not badmouth your Directors, crew, or cast mates
Do not suggest to your Director a “better” way to do something regarding the production, especially in front of everyone
Do not disrespect the theatre building

It's all covered more in-depth in the episode. Enjoy!
