BWW 010: Getting massive traffic to your brand NEW BLOG - What all the NEWBIES NEED TO KNOW

August 12, 2013

New blog? No list? No audience? No fan base? Need FREE traffic? NO PROBLEM!

OK…. That’s a HUGE LIE.

Would you like some truth about getting traffic to your brand new blog? OK, here it is.

IT”S GOING TO BE CHALLENGING….

I know, I know, that’s not exactly what you wanted to hear. You wanted to hear the truth though right? It’s very hard to get eyes on a new blog. This is especially true if you’re new to the online scene and don’t already have an existing fan base.

Now, how about some good news?

The good news, is that there are a few steps that you can take to start getting traffic to your brand new blog almost immediately.

Here’s a small hint… It’s not going to because you share your content on Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus.

I need to share an opinion with you.

This may be shocking to some, and I’m going to offend a lot of people. Many so called GURU’S will strongly disagree with me and say horrible things about me after they read this.

Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus are a COMPLETE WAIST OF YOUR TIME.

Yep, that’s right. If you’re starting a brand new blog, and you have no current fan base or following, then wasting time messing around with those 3 social networks will do absolutely nothing for you. It will waist your time, distract you and discourage you. DON’T DO IT. Stay away from it.

There are a lot more important things to focus your attention on, especially in the beginning. Now I can hear the whiners now, complaining and spouting off about how great these social networks are. Most of those people are probably selling a digital product promising you millions of dollars in sales if you buy their AMAZING social media secrets.

They are full of crap. Don’t fall for it.

I’m also not saying that there is not a place and a value in using Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus. What I am saying is that there is no value in you spending your time focusing on them when you are just getting started.

Let’s talk about some REAL ways that you can start getting lot’s of traffic to your brand new blog. First, let’s set the expectation. If you want to get traffic to your new blog, then you’re going to have to work your butt off for it. It’s going to be a grind, but It’s a grind that will pay off long term.

If you’re looking for a push button solution, then It’s probably best that you go find a 9 – 5 job. You’re not cut out to own your own business. SORRY….

Now that I’ve made it very clear that It’s going to be hard work, let’s get into some actual solutions and some REAL examples.

My brand new blog

I started a blog 5 days ago and I have already had 239 page views. That’s an average of 48 page views per day. Not bad considering I only worked on driving traffic for a couple hours on the first day.

Now you may not consider that massive traffic, but if you were to implement these strategies on a daily basis, image the amount of traffic that you could drive to your blog. The graph below is the Google Analytics from August 7th – August 11th.

My newly created blog is about a new online MMORPG that is going to be coming out soon. There is a huge audience for it and I have been playing the previous versions of this game since the year 2000. I have a solid knowledge of the community and the game itself, so It only made since for me to create some content around the topic.

Not only that, I’m going to be beta testing the game, and this new blog will be a great place for me to record my experiences and thoughts about It’s development. The game is called EverQuest Next and you can check out my blog at www.everquestboss.com

Rather then just give you an action items list, I thought I would share EXACTLY what I’ve been doing to drive traffic to my brand new blog.

Have several peaces of content ready to go at launch

First thing I did, was I made sure that I had several peaces of content ready to go at the point of launch. It’s a BIG mistake to launch a blog with only 1 or 2 peaces of content. I launched my site with 4 blog post ready to go and an entire category full of videos related to my topic.

If you launch a site with only 1 or 2 peaces of content, then your readers are going to assume that you’re not relevant and not an expert in your niche. DON’T GIVE OFF THE WRONG FIRST IMPRESSION.

When you have several peaces of useful content for the readers to consume, you can establish yourself as someone who is knowledgeable and trustworthy. Don’t waist your time trying to drive traffic for only a single post.

Discovery Engines

Secondly, I posted all my blog post on Stumbleupon.

Stumbleupon is one of my favorite ways to get traffic my website quickly. Stumbleupon is one of the top referrers to all my websites and I always make sure to submit every blog post I have to this great network.

Along with Stumbleipon, I also submitted all my post to Reddit, Digg and Scoopit. All of these discovery engines have a healthy readership and consistently refer visitors to my websites.

Squidoo Lenses

Squidoo is a community website platform. What’s cool about it, is you can created pages (called lenses) for any subject your heart desires. Every time I create a new blog I always go and create a Squiddo lens on the same topic. It’s a great way to get a few links pointing to your website as well as generate referrals to your blog. There is also opportunity to make money from your Squidoo lenses. There are content creators out there who’s whole business model revolves around creating Squidoo lenses. Check out my Squidoo lens here.

Commenting on related blogs

Commenting on blogs, especially high quality blogs, can be an extremely effective way to drive traffic to your website. Now not all blogs will allow you to leave comments with a link, but some will. You’ll just have to figure out which ones.

Don’t leave GARBAGE for comments.

Leave a comment that adds value those reading them. This way you’re less likely to have your comment removed as spam, and more likely to have people clicking through to your site.

Connect with a highly creditable blog and see if they will link to you

This particular one is not an easy one to accomplish, but if you can pull it off it can make a huge difference in the success of your blog.

I happen to notice that the official website for EverQuest Next had created a list of recommend fan sites.

Obviously I WANT to be on that list!

I sent the administrator for the website a quick message, letting them know who I was, what my experience was and told them about my website. I asked them if they would add me to their list of fan sites and sure enough, they did!

It never hurts to ASK… You can see from the screen shot below, that my new blog has been added to their list of fan sites!

Find relevant forums and leave a link

Leaving links on relevant forums can be a very effective way to drive TONS of traffic to your blog in a short amount of time. However, you need to make sure you read the user agreements first. A lot of forums consider it spamming for you to leave links.

Just like it is with leaving comments on blogs, you need to make sure that you’re not just leaving a link. Leave value on the forum and make sure the forum is relevant to your topic. Leave a relevant question that would be interesting to those on the forum and then leave a link back to your blog.

Join and summit your content to LinkedIn Groups

Now even though I don’t recommend spending much time messing around with social media when you first start building your online blog, I do however recommend using LinkedIn groups.

The reason for this, is because you can join these groups right away and start sharing your content with thousands of people.

Where as with Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus, it takes a lot of work and time to build up your following. Focusing to much energy on that, instead of focusing on creating great content will do more harm then good.

Make sure to sign up for my FREE LinkedIn eBook and video training course at the bottom of this post. Below is a video on using LinkedIn groups to drive traffic to your website, from my free LinkedIn training course.

The most important thing you need to know about driving traffic

You have probably heard the phrase “content is king”. If you really want to get lot’s of traffic and have a successful blog, then your content needs to be INTOXICATING. It needs to the best in your niche. If your content is average or below average, then no one will share your content and your blog will ultimately be a complete waist of time. Focus on making sure that every peace of content you put out is the best peace of content on the subject.

If you focus on doing that, then it won’t be long before people will be flooding to your blog and you will quickly become viewed as an authority in your niche.
