#30: Hozier Sues Chilly Gonzales For Slander

October 08, 2015

In a recent video in his Pop Masterclass series, Chilly Gonzales pointed out that the Hozier song Take Me To Church shares a striking resemblance to the Feist song How Come You Never Go There from her 2011 album Metals. In his video, Gonzales made an off-the-cuff remark that Feist should take Hozier to court. He wasn't really serious because you can't really copyright a chord structure. If Hozier sues Chilly Gonzales for Slander, it could set a dangerous precedent in the music industry where simply suggesting that a song sounds similar to another one could end up in a lawsuit. Chilly Gonzales has since retracted his accusation of plagiarism and Hozier claims he was only looking for an apology. Once he got that apology, the lawsuit was dropped. That's kind of a strange way to go about getting an apology from someone. Why didn't he just contact Gonzales' people and ask for a retraction? Seems like a waste of legal resources to me.
