Bruce & Hobbes Podcast: Dave Dewey, Lacey’s Fund

July 07, 2016

This week, Bruce & Hobbes are joined by:

Dave Dewey - Lacey’s Fund, Past President, Vermont Police Canine Association

Police dogs of the Vermont Police Canine Association come in all shapes & sizes, but the one thing they have in common is their unselfish service to citizens. Some find drugs, some protect their handler. Others help locate missing or lost people, while some track fugitives. These dogs work as hard as they can, for as long as they can. They work in all sorts of weather, on multiple deployments, and often, in dangerous situations.

In their off-duty hours, these dogs become part of families. The dogs are well taken care of during their working careers (usually 5-10 years), and typically retire to the homes & families of their handlers. In many instances, the strain from their job causes them to suffer from ailments later in life their handlers can simply not afford. This is where Lacey’s Fund steps in to help.

The goal of Lacey’s Fund is to assist handlers with the resources needed to enable these canine heroes to live out their retirement in good health. On this week’s podcast, Dave joins the boys to talk about the organization, and its’ work.

During his visit with “Bruce & Hobbes,” David discusses:

-How Lacey’s Fund got started
-What a police K9 does, and what life is like for them
-Who typically pays for the care of these dogs
-What types of injuries they typically get
-What happens to these dogs when they’re no longer working
-Why communities don’t typically pay for the care of these animals after they retire
-Who the fund is helping right now
