Travel Podcast 8: Best March Vacations
Best Beach Destinations in March to Avoid the Spring Break Crowds

Sunset over Minitas Beach, Dominican Republic

Planning to take an amazing beach vacation in March? This travel podcast episode discusses the best March vacations you should consider for an amazing March beach vacation away from the college spring break crowds. There are lots of great beaches around the world in March, but this episode focuses on the top 3 March beach destinations:

La Romana, Dominican Republic

  • Third largest city in Dominican Republic
  • Easily reachable by flights from the USA to La Romana
  • Average air and sea temperature of 79 degrees Fahrenheit in March
  • Casa de Campo resort is one of the best in the world

    • Three world class Pete Dye designed golf courses, including

      • Teeth of the Dog – Called the “Pebble Beach of the Caribbean.” One of the most stunningly beautiful ocean/cliff side golf courses in the world
      • Dye Fore – Jaw-dropping 7700 yards from the back with seven cliff-side holes overlooking the Chavon River
      • The Links – Recently redone in 2012 to turn this into a beautiful and challenging inland course

    • Altos de Chavon – Man-made replica of a 16th century Mediterranean village, complete with shops, art galleries, cobblestone streets, an archeological museum, and a 5,000 seat Grecian style amphitheater
    • Great Beaches

      • Minitas Beach – Private, beautiful beach you can walk to from your room
      • Palmilla Beach on Saona Island – Located in the Parque Nacional del Este and combining great wildlife diversity with a romantic deserted island feel

Puerto Morelos, Mexico

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  • The summer is starting to end in March, which means the crowds and prices start to decrease, but the average temperature is still 80 degrees Fahrenheit: feels like summer but pay fall prices
  • Almost unlimited activities available in Rio, including visiting Christ the Redeemer, climbing Sugar Loaf Mountain, visiting world-class museums, and of course, lounging at the best city beaches in the world:

    • Praia Vermelha- Relatively small beach located in a cove at the base of Sugar Loaf Mountain.
    • Prainha Beach- Located on the west side of Rio this is one of the least crowded and most beautiful beaches in Rio. Especially popular with surfers and people who enjoy long walks on the beautiful sand.
    • Copacabana Beach – One of the most famous beaches in the world. Long curving beach that can become overrun with crowds during the summer, but shouldn’t be as bad during the week in March. Enjoy sipping on a caipirinha while enjoying the world-class people watching.
    • Ipanema Beach – More upscale neighbor to Copacabana Beach. The beach is one very long sandy stretch with both cleaner water and sand than Copacabana beach, but the water is slightly more dangerous in this area for swimming.
