Travel Podcast 5: California Beach Camping:
Best Places to Camp on the Beach in California

If you prefer your beach vacations to come with a tent or an RV, rather than with a pool boy delivering mai tais, then this episode is for you. In this travel podcast I discuss the 5 best California beach camping destinations for your camping California beach vacation. Whether you’re looking in Northern California or Southern California, there are plenty of great beach campsites available for you to consider for your California beach camping vacation.

Patrick’s Point State Beach, Trinidad

  • 80 miles south of the Oregon border and 25 miles north of Eureka
  • 640 acre state park with amazing coastal scenery
  • Ample activities off the shore, including miles of hiking trails along the coast and through the forest and a recreated Yurok Village

Manchester Beach

  • Approximately 150 miles north of San Francisco
  • 5 mile stretch of gently curving sandy beach
  • Point Arena Lighthouse provides great photo opportunities and amazing views from the top

Julia Pfieffer Burns State Park, Big Sur

  • 35 minutes south of Monterey
  • Two small environmental campsites available, each accommodating up to 8 people
  • No cars at the campsite – must hike 1/4 mile from the parking lot
  • Some of the most impressive scenery in all of California, including views of McWay Falls, an 80 foot waterfall that empties into the Pacific Ocean

Channel Islands National Park

  • Easiest to reach the Channel Islands by taking a boat from Ventura or Oxnard Harbor
  • Isolated islands have a diverse range of biodiversity
  • Four of the islands have campgrounds, ranging from very isolated locations with no potable water, to more comfortable campsites with running water and solar powered showers

Doheny State Beach, Laguna Beach

  • One of the few locations in California where you can camp right on the sand if you get a good campsite
  • Sandy beach is more than one mile long
  • Rocky ocean floor, so bring water shoes if you plan on swimming in the ocean
