Raising Primates
Attachment Parenting and RIE with Deborah Carlisle Solomon
Deborah Carlisle Solomon, author of Baby Knows Best and former executive director of RIE (Resources for Infant Educarers), and I sit down to talk about the similarities and perhaps some differences between the two parenting philosophies (AP & RIE). We discuss:
-Deborah's journey through motherhood and how she found RIE
-The 7 principles of RIE
-The emphasis RIE places on trusting infants in their innate wisdom to explore and develop in their own unique time
-Why container (car seats, strollers, baby seats, swings, etc) use should be kept to a minimum, particularly with young babies, in order to promote optimal motor skills development and core strength
-The importance of having reasonable expectations of children that line up with their cognitive and linguistic development
-RIE's philosophy regarding babies that are crying or upset - does this match up with AP principles?
-How RIE's principles of mindfulness and pausing can help any parent-child dyad in a variety of situations
