Pre-Race Meal on the LCHF Diet: What to eat before running?

We have been getting a lot of questions about what you can eat as a pre-race meal on the LCHF diet when running a race like the Comrades Marathon for example. Becoming fat adapted and running on the low carb high fat diet takes a change in thinking as much as it takes a change in diet. On today’s episode of the Ask Prof Noakes Podcast Brad Brown asks Professor Tim Noakes what would be the ideal pre-race meal on the Low Carb High Fat Diet?


Prof Tim Noakes: Nothing. You go into your races fasting so you don’t eat a pre-race meal. When your metabolism is perfect you will find it is amazing. You just don’t need to eat. My view is that when you are fat adapted you really only to eat every eight hours or so. So if you are involved in a race and you had a meal last night, ok so you slept for eight hours, but you still don’t need to eat.


High Fat Pre-Race Meal

You could eat a high fat breakfast as a pre-race meal if you wanted to but there is no real need to. If you’re going to run for more than six hours, well after six hours you need lunch, so you sit down and eat lunch. And that is how the body works. The idea that you have to keep refuelling is only if you’re on carbohydrates, because you’re going to run out after two or three hours so you have to keep refuelling. But if you on fat, you have all this fat in your body, why don’t you just burn it. READ MORE
