Thad Markham - Other Galleries Are Not Enemies. - Art Dealer Show

August 23, 2016

You can try to make a living doing what you love. Or you can try to love what makes you a living. This seems to be the two basic choices that we all face when seeking our fortune. In the case of our guest, Thad Markham it was a journey of trying it one way before saving his life by embracing the other.

Thad is the designer and publisher of Out Of The Bowl sculptures. He is also the owner of Artifacts Gallery in Cambria Ca, just due south of the tourist destination Hearst Castle in San Simion. For the past twenty-five years, Thad’s gallery has grown and prospered in this idyllic beach front community. All the while several other galleries have come and gone.

I’ve always been enamored by Thad’s no-nonsense style of business. He’s always made his choices based on what the public responds to and he simply removes what they don’t. As simple as that may seem, it’s often the fundamental thing that is lost in an industry filled with gallery owners who have lofty personal visions to impress the world with, as well as others who attempt to predict what the public will want next with complex theories.

“The whole business in my gallery has been based on what does the public love, not what do I love.” – Thad Markham.

Also on the show this week, we celebrate a milestone for our new podcast: not reaching a hundred thousand listeners, our millionth download or making it into iTunes “New and Noteworthy”. We have received our first angry email from a disgruntled listener. We have arrived!

Cheers.
