The Broncos didn’t exactly end their season the way they wanted too.

The Boise State wrestling team finished in third place at the Pac 12 Championships last weekend and then this past weekend lost their final dual of the season to their bitter rivals the Oregon State Beavers.

In what has been a down year, the Broncos were hoping to hit the reset button with a Pac 12 Championship but it was not meant to be.

Boise State finished behind conference rivals Stanford and the conference champions Oregon State. For Oregon State this was their third straight Pac 12 title.

“Oregon State wrestled well and dominated the tournament,” head coach Greg Randall said. “We held Stanford off until the finals, but they wrestled really well in front of their home crowd. We would definitely like to have a couple matches back, but I’m proud of these guys and the way they wrestled today.”

Despite the disappointments the Broncos did have a few high notes on the day.

Senior Jake Swartz won his impressive third straight Pac 12 title for the Broncos to secure his spot in the NCAA Championships.

“The first one was definitely the sweetest,” Swartz said. “It’s your first one, and you know you have a bright future in front of you. But this one feels great, and I’m ready and looking forward to nationals.”

In addition senior heavyweight JT Felix won his first Pac 12 title and capped off what has been a most impressive season.

“Finally winning a Pac-12 title feels fantastic,” Felix said. “I can’t believe it took me four years to win one, but it has made me a better person.”

Both Swartz and Felix have been the lone bright spots on the team on and otherwise disappointing season for the Broncos.

Going out as Pac-12 champions as seniors means a lot to these guys. It was a good way to finish their conference careers, and it goes down on their resume for good,” Randall said. “But they still have one more tournament in front of them.”

Along with Swartz and Felix the Broncos did get a pair of second place finishers from sophomores Rami Haddadin and Chris Castillo and junior Steven Hernandez  finished third.

Only Swartz and Felix are guaranteed spots in the NCAA National Championships as the Broncos will wait to see if they will get any at large bids for Haddadin, Castillo, and Hernandez.

The dual with Oregon State which had been scheduled for earlier last month was finally rescheduled and provided the Broncos an opportunity to not only honor their seniors but close the season with a win.

Before the dual began the Broncos honored seniors JT Felix, Jake Swartz, Brian Owen, and Ben DeMeulle

Unfortunately this did not happen for the Broncos as Oregon State smashed Boise State 34-6. The Broncos did rest many of their starters for the event including Swartz and Felix who are gearing up for nationals in just a few short weeks.

Boise State hopes to get a few more wrestlers into the NCAA National Championships and close the season out there on a high note.
