Hibo Wardere - helping end FGM throughout the world

May 22, 2017

Over three million girls and women worldwide are at risk of FGM (female genital mutilation) every year. In thirty African countries and countries world wide, girls are subjected to this horrific practice, starting as early as infancy with most having been cut by the age of five. Long ranging effects include severe bleeding, problems urinating and with menstrual cycles, infertility, complications in childbirth and sometimes death. I talked with Hibo Wardere, the author of CUT, One woman's fight against FGM in Britain today. She told me her story from Leaving Somalia and landing in London knowing only one word in English, to her place today as one of the leading activists and campaigners against FGM.
A warning about this episode as it contains a frank and sometimes graphic discussion about FGM. If there are younger listeners with you, you might want to hit the pause button until they are not listening.
