Stanford, Cal And SMU Unexpected ACC ’23 Additions?

August 09, 2023

Is it possible that 12 of 14 ACC schools will say yes to Stanford, California and SMU as the newest members of the conference? So many starting points when it comes to asking questions. We went to the Publisher of the Sports Illustrated/Fan Nation site, All Cardinal, Kevin Borba for some answers. Borba was straight forward about the strengths and weaknesses that Stanford brings to the table. He also delved into how such a realignment might impact student-athletes (yes, we can still use that term) who are in sports other than football and basketball. It’s a serious concern.

The PAC 12, in existence for 108 years came tumbling down in front of our eyes with seemingly just one Jenga block removed and that would be Colorado. After their announcement that they were departing and the dust had settled only four teams remained. Which conference would come to their rescue? Borba gets into some details as to why they haven’t and probably won’t.

Stanford

If Stanford, Cal and SMU were added it would bring in lucrative television and recruiting markets for the ACC in San Francisco and Dallas. California and Texas are knee deep in athletic talent. Borba shares his thoughts on a number of other similar schools that he feels would be solid additions to the ACC as well. Might the conference go in this direction? Is it a if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em attitude moving forward?
