January 01, 2017

Join Tyrone as he gives his reaction to 2016 film Assassin’s Creed. The film under utilizes the extraordinary amount of talent and doesn’t flesh out the world it invites us to. Did I enjoy it? Yes. But I’m disappointed that the Assassin’s Creed cinematic universe may not get another chance, unlike its protagonist.

Background on the video-game series
Assassin’s Creed is an action-adventure video-game series created by Ubisoft that consists of nine main games and a number of supporting materials. The games have appeared on multiple gaming platforms.
The games are set in a fictional history of real-world events and follows the centuries-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The main games in the franchise were developed by Ubisoftl. The series has been well received by the public and critics, and has sold over 93 million copies as of June 2015, becoming Ubisoft’s best selling franchise. The series took inspiration from the novel Alamut by the Slovenian writer Vladimir Bartol, while building upon concepts from the Prince of Persia series.
Summary

* Reaction: When Callum Lynch explores the memories of his ancestor Aguilar and gains the skills of a Master Assassin, he discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society.

* A live-action film, Assassin’s Creed, set in the same universe as the video games and other media, was released on December 21, 2016. Development for the film began in October 2011, when Sony Pictures entered final negotiations with Ubisoft Motion Pictures to make the film. In July 2012, Michael Fassbender was announced to star in the film, as well as co-produce the film. His role was revealed in August 2015 as Callum Lynch, whose ancestor Aguilar, is an assassin from 15th Century Spain. In October 2012, Ubisoft revealed the film would no longer produced by Sony Pictures, instead co-produced with New Regency and distributed by 20th Century Fox. In January 2013, Michael Lesslie was hired to write the film, with Scott Frank, Adam Cooper and Bill Collage performing rewrites to the script. By the end of April 2014, Justin Kurzel was in talks to direct. Principal photography began on August 31, 2015, and ended on January 15, 2016.

Overall Score: 6/10
Up next: We’ll be reviewing season 1 & 2 of ABC’s How To Get Away with Murder starring Viola Davis in in the next few weeks. In the meantime, I’m sure we’ll find plenty to talk about in the new year!
