Visual Design Why It's Important

March 17, 2024

Today, we'll discuss visual design and how it impacts us nearly every day. Words and visuals help people identify and make decisions, so we must understand visual design and how the arrangement and presentation of elements can create something visually appealing and effective in communicating a message or an idea. If your topography is challenging to read, too big, too small, or a script, you might lose an audience because it's tough to read.

You want to include specific things and elements in your designs for different mediums. You have to think about balance, a hierarchy, and whether you're using sans serif in your text and then serif in your headlines. Is there enough contrast for an audience member to get your message quickly if you're having all gray designs? If so, emphasize those words or shapes with leading lines or blurring out the background.

When designing a website, you should consider your target audience. If you're targeting children, use larger fonts and simpler words. When you create something, you must talk to your audience in a manner that they would understand and use words that they might not have in their vocabulary. You also want to invoke some specific emotions and convey an intended message.

When teaching visual design in school, I always tell students to create a graphic and use less than 15 words because people need to read. They see pictures and overlook the words, and now they want to see visually what they need to know and decide very quickly.

When I'm taking photographs or creating something, I like to use some lines. I can use curved, thick, and thin lines and frame words with just simple lines. If I want to talk about my favorite food, sushi, I'm going to use the shape of sushi or even colors to evoke the idea of making you hungry and encouraging you to go buy some sushi from this restaurant. Okay, so there we go. That's my take on visual design, and the primary purpose of visual design is to get somebody to do something when they see the graphic we've designed.
